July 23 2006 Quiz information

Quiz 4 has been marked. The results were not very good. After some discussion it was decided that the class would vote on whether to go with the best 3 out of 5 quizzes or the best 4 out of 5. This vote will take place on August 2, just prior to the next quiz. The vote will be considered only if it is unanimous, and all class members vote (i.e., everyone must be there.) So if you would like this to change, you must be present.

Quiz 5 will test your skills using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to prioritize requirements. We will discuss AHP this week in lecture, and will do an example with Jennifer in tutorial. You should bring a (non-programmable) calculator to class (to speed up calculations), both this week for tutorial and next week for the quiz. The technique for AHP is summarized on the third and fourth pages of the required reading for this week — I recommend you actually look at it.

July 14 2006 Assignment 3 due date changed to Tuesday, July 25, Assignment 4 due date changed to Tuesday, August 8

Since we will not cover verification and validation until next lecture ... and since you are expected to verify your models for consistency, the deadline for Assignment 3 has been changed to the following Tuesday, July 25th. This will give you the time required to ensure that your models are complete and consistent.

Assignment 4 will be due two weeks later, on Tuesday, August 8, at 6:00 p.m.

July 13 2006 Midterm solution posted and quiz info

A sample midterm solution is posted here Remark requests must be submitted in class by Wednesday, July 19 (and will not be accepted later.)

The next quiz (this Wednesday, July 19) will emphasize the modeling techniques learned in the last class (SCR tables, Use case diagrams and Sequence diagrams). While you will not be quizzed on minutia that may need to be memorized, you will be expected to correctly implement these techniques.

July 6 2006 Midterm marks have been posted

The marks for the midterm exam have been posted. I will try to get a sample solution posted before class next week.

July 1 2006 Tutorial 7, Class and ER diagrams, now posted

The notes in tutorial 7 provide you with a process to create these diagrams. They may prove helpful to some of you who are not sure how to proceed.

June 30, 2006 The midterm starts at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday

There will not be a lecture this week — we will have the midterm instead. The midterm will start at 7:00 and will go to 8:30. Please try to arrive about 10 minutes early so that we can start on time (and get out early).

June 28, 2006 Assignment 2 does not require statecharts

Since we only covered statecharts tonight, and since the assignment was originally due last night, you will not be required to provide statecharts in Assignment 2. Have a great long weekend!

June 24, 2006 REMEMBER! BA1240 This Week

Please remember that for this week only, class will be held in Bahen room BA1240.

June 21, 2006 Office hours room change

June 14, 2006 Assignment 2 is now available

Assignment 2, the preparation of a feasibility study is now available on the assignments page of the course website.

June 11, 2006 Helpful Review Notes

To help clarify some of the modeling concepts presented in the last lecture, some additional notes. have been prepared and posted on the in Week 5 of the Lectures section of the course website. This may help you to prepare for your quiz this week.

June 6, 2006 Late Assignment Submission, Instructor Office hours, and Remark Requests

Any assignments that are handed in later than the Wednesday class must be put directly in the course drop box in BA2220 (CDF Lab). They will not be accepted in class later than the first Wednesday immediately following the due date.

Office hours with the instructor will be held on Wednesdays, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Bahen room BA3234. You are welcome to come and discuss any course material at that time.

Requests for remarks will be accepted up to one week from the date that marked materials are returned to you in class. You must complete the remark request available on the assignment page of the course webpage. After this time, a remark request for the returned material will not be considered.

June 6, 2006 Office hours for Assignment 1

Jennifer Horkoff will be available in Sandford Flemming room SF3207 for office hours. The purpose of this session is to answer any questions that you may have about Assignment 1 (which is due next week).

June 5, 2006 Unofficial Marks have been posted and Writing Tips

The unofficial marks for Assignment 0 and Quiz 1 have been posted here.

I have put together some writing tips. This list is an attempt to correct some of the errors (common to many of you), which I found in the Assignment 0 submissions — and that (hopefully) I will not find in future submissions.

May 27, 2006 Links Added for Off-Campus Access to Required-Reading Papers

For those of you who are having trouble accessing readings by searching the IEEE Xplore website by author, conference, or some other criteria, the process has been simplified. An additional link has been added to the lectures page for off-campus access. This will direct you and give you access to the paper via the library my.access system.

NOTE: To accomplish this, the URL has been prefaced with the following: " http://myaccess.library.utoronto.ca/login?url= " . This is a neat trick should you require remote access to other papers in the future.

May 25, 2006 Handing in Assignments, Teams, Team Evaluations and Tutorial Solutions

Assignment Submission: Since some of you live far from campus, it has been agreed that you may hand in the paper copy of your assignment in class the following day — providing you follow these rules:

  1. The paper copy must not differ in any way from your electronic copy. If you do change it, you must indicate the changes made, and lose 10% as it will in effect be late.
  2. The electronic copy must still be submitted by the Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. deadline stated in the information page.

Team Restructuring: The teams have been revised due to people adding and dropping the course. If you have a problem with your team, please do not hesitate to come to me. I will try to help straighten things out.

Team Evaluations: You must submit an evaluation for each member of your team, including yourself.

Tutorial Solutions: Tutorial solutions will never be posted.

May 25, 2006 Accessing electronic copies of books and papers remotely from the library

As a University of Toronto Student, you are provided with access to several electronic resources (including IEEE Xplore). If you are unfamiliar with how to remotely access books and articles using myaccess, review the procedures available at UTL.Services.my.access

If you are trying to get this week's readings from IEEE Xplore:

  1. Go to the U of T Library Resources and enter IEEE Xplore in the find e-resouces entry box.
  2. Select IEEE Xplore
  3. Enter your my.access off-campus information
  4. Select Standards from the navigation menu on the left side of the page
  5. Enter 830-1998 in the entry box and press Go
  6. You can now download the full text remotely

In addition to the papers you will need to read for this course, there are lots of online CS books — including some on UML. Just search (using relevant key-words) (using relevant key-words) on the topic that interests you. If you're a book-freak like me, you'll find lots of goodies there!

Please don't abuse this service. The library has discontinued this service in the past because people were copying books. I believe they now have software to monitor this, and will warn you if they think you are copying a book. If you persist, they will probably (ambiguous - I know) suspend your electronic privilege.

May 20, 2006 Teams have been posted on the course webpage

Consideration has been given to everyone's needs, skills, and preferences when putting the teams together — especially geographical constraints. In order to make it easier for you to work together, where possible, the teams have been assigned by campus.

The team listings can be found through a link off the assignment page, or here.

May 19, 2006 Your CDF Account and Submitting Assignment 0

When you register for this course you are given an account on the CDF computer network. You will use this account to electronically submit assignments.

Look up your CDF username: http://www.cdf.toronto.edu/cgi-bin/webfinger

May 18, 2006 ROOM CHANGED for the BETTER!

Fortunately, we have been able to move our classes back to Bahen. Lectures and tutorials will be held in BA2185 every Wednesday from 6 - 9 p.m. — except for June 28. On June 28, we will use BA1240. We won't have to endure a summer without air conditioning.

May 17, 2006 ROOM CHANGE!

The lectures will be held in WB 130 - NOT in Bahen. The Wallberg building is the long red building on the northeast corner of St.George and College.

May 15, 2006 First lecture 3 hours

While there will be no tutorial the first week, expect the first lecture to cover three hours of material.

May 15, 2006 Course announcements will be posted here

You are responsible for reading this page regularly. All important announcements, including clarifications, extensions and cancellations will be posted here.
