CDF Plug-in Network HOWTO
Table of Contents
Please report any errors or omissions to admin@cdf.
Hardware Requirements
In general, CDF's plug-in network should be compatible with any laptop
ethernet card (10 or 100Mbps) with an RJ45 style port.
You will also need to provide your own patch cable to connect
your laptop to the network. These cables (commonly referred to as
Category 5, CAT 5 and/or UTP cables) are available at most computer
stores. The U of T Computer Shop sells them for less than $5.
CDF staff will not be providing "loaner" patch
cables.
Software Requirements
In general, if your OS has a supported driver for your network card, you
should be able to connect to our plugin network.
Plugin Locations
Only network jacks in the Study Hall (BA2230) can be used to connect
to CDF's mobile computing network. Do not use jacks in any other
rooms. Do not unplug network connections from CDF workstations
or other equipment.
Setup Instructions
Windows Setup
- Ensure your laptop has been configured to 'Obtain an IP address
automatically' under Network settings.
- Connect one end of your patch cable to the network port on your
laptop. Plug the other end of the patch cable into the jack
mounted on the table.
- The LED next to the network port on the laptop should light up
momentarily.
- Launch an ssh client, and connect to wifi.cs.toronto.edu
You should get a login prompt.
- Login using your CDF account name appended with '-cdf' and your
CDF password. eg if your cdf account is 'g2foobar' you will log in with the
username 'g2foobar-cdf'. Do not include the quotes.
At this point you should see a welcome message. Keep the window open to
maintain your connection. You can minimize it, swap it to a different
workspace, etc. but the window must remain alive or your connection
will be blocked.
